Circle of Sound

Life is Musical

The Circle of Sound is a musical vision inclusive to all, where children explore the many different properties of sound, examining the power behind harmonics, healing sounds, vibrations and frequencies. Children will travel back into history, where they will learn about ancient traditions and rituals, and the healing properties that different sounds and frequencies are believed to posses. Recreational learning experiences are probably one of the most effective ways young children learn to be creative naturally. We value children’s creativity and accept their uniqueness in an environment that is responding to their interests and that allows them the freedom to think and act differently, in unison or in collaboration.

This project seeks to enhance the experience of both the learning musician who is exploring the world of instruments and genres, as well as it's audience and participating students. There will be numerous workshops and seminars throughout the year, open to the community, the children, and performing artists. This also serves as a portal to raise consciousness of how far we have evolved in the making of music without forgetting the origins of ancient instruments and our harmonic roots.

Curriculum

Throughout our music curriculum, we have a variety of percussion instruments collected from around the world, allowing children to experiment and master what interests them. In the recording studio they will have time to observe and participate in music being captured, step by step and in real time. Exposure to modern music technology can open entire worlds of often limitless creativity in composition. The lack of preset ideas in children about what music is and how it is made, can make this area exciting for most. They will see how easy it can be to make music they can call their own, and share with others. Children with special needs will benefit from artistic ownership and identity. Youth will gain in-depth technical knowledge of recording basics, regardless of their special needs. They will learn to record, edit, master and mix audio, using different software and hardware applications and avant-garde experimentation.

Indigenous Music Coalition

The Circle of Sound project incorporates the participation of real artists and musicians working side by side with the students, helping them to understand and learn about making music, recording audio, and performing. Making music and learning about different ways we can create music will stimulate problem solving explorations and skills. Children will be challenged to explore different areas of music while learning a new form of communication that can enhance their literacy and math skills for future learning. It also provides a practical way of performing that emerges naturally as the child/student feels more confident in mastering an instrument. This can also motivate and encourage children of all ages to explore their senses through learning and making sound, and the various ways sounds, notes, rhythms, and patterns are put together. All of this can help in creative ways that enables the child to have constructive thinking skills, mathematical and organizational skills, as well as good auditory awareness.

Program Components

All young preschoolers and school-age children will possess age-appropriate hands-on knowledge and understanding in areas of:

"If we can change the way our children see the world and each other, teaching them that they are powerful enough to create the world they want, then we can truly change their
future for the better."
